Ooops! Trending...

There are a lot of stories circulating the social media regarding the controversy that the Bureau of Customs has been facing.
Various people and their experiences have shown a clear corruption on the department's side. The staff will open the boxes then state some amount of tax to the recipients. Most are over the standard amount for personal and household belongings.
According to the Amending Section 105 of the Tariff and Custom Code of the Philippines, any personal and household belongings can only have a tax not exceeding 10000 Philippine peso.
Meanwhile, on the plea not to open the balikbayan boxes, the chef of Bureau of Customs - Bert Lina responded negatively. He insisted that it's their duty to know whether the boxes contain illegal materials or dutiable items. He claimed that he doesn't want to be blamed for the increasing number of smuggled drugs and weapons.
